The Netflix thriller series Squid Games season two was the third most watched season of a television show ever on the streaming service Netflix. Even though season one of the television series was a smash hit, season two did not rank as high. It got an 83% on Rotten Tomatoes and some critics even said that it was disappointing.
Season two starts off with the main character Seong Gi-hun, trying to hunt down the masters of the “games” that he previously won years before. He eventually ends up back in the games trying to take down the masters from inside the game pen. Gi-hun has to play more games with new contestants while people outside of the games are searching for where the games could possibly take place. The show’s season two being released in late 2024 with only seven episodes is already renewed for a season three that is rumored to be released in 2025.
Season two was successful because of the plot twists and deaths that occurred. The biggest plot twist was by a character that the audience thought they could trust and another plot twist was ironic considering the audience knew that it was going to happen. Another reason season two was entertaining was because of the new games added to the competition. The game “Red Light, Green Light”, that was in the first season, was still suspenseful and nostalgic to the original games. The second game challenge included mini Korean games like “Gonggi” and “Paengi Chigi”, where the contestants were on a team and chained together. The last game that is seen in season two is called “Mingle”, which is a carousel game where contents have to work together. This game was a fan favorite and the most stressful game to watch. Season two expanded the Squid Game world by introducing new characters and stories. It showed new game arenas and new locations outside the arenas. It also expanded the series world by adding a story line about the pink guards back story and job. One South Lakes student mentioned his opinion on the new story lines.
“I like being able to see his friends help him outside and explore more of the setting of the show than just inside the gaming arena,” said Junior Liam Andrews.
Even though season two was entertaining, there were still many flaws that were hard to move past. The biggest issue in this season was that it was split in two. The next part, which is known as season three, won’t come out until 2025, so this led the end of season two to be very uneventful. The season was setting up important story lines but they were never completed in this season or really even started. It felt like this season led to nothing and that it was only setting the stage for the next season of the show. There was no actual ending, it was all left on cliffhangers. There were many questions left unanswered and fans were very confused that there weren’t more episodes to the season. The season was also a major let down because of how amazing the first season was. Fans were ready for season two to be even better but it more just felt like a filler season.
Fans are ready for the third season to see what happens next to these exciting characters and story lines.
