On the last day of school, students take final exams and immediately go home.
Last year, as a freshman, it hardly felt like school had just ended. I felt confused.
It was too abrupt and definitely not a very good ending to my first year in high school.
In middle school, we completed all final exams and whatnot about a week prior to the end of school, leaving students time to wind down. The extra week after exams allowed teachers to educate students on interesting topics they did not have the time to discuss during the year.
Even if some people think that extra days on the end are a waste, they may be necessary to keep up good grades during the fourth quarter.
Teachers may not like it, but there will be kids who have missing work. Even just a couple of days at the end of the year may be just what those struggling kids need.
The biggest problem about having final exams on the last day of school is that some students, whether or not it is parent’s decision, leave town for vacation on the last days of school. Sometimes the only time the student’s family leave for a trip is that day, forcing the student to miss school.
I know what you are thinking, it is their problem and they will just have to take it early. However, with all other final exams and work to worry about, finding an appropriate amount of time to study can be difficult.
Considering final exams are worth a whole separate grade than the quarter grades, they are not something to mess with.
