Typically by the time February rolls around, people prepare to either celebrate or condone the national day of relationships.
Now on Feb. 14, also known as St. Valentine’s Day, many people are not only celebrating love but also Single Awareness Day.
S.A.D. was a term created by recent culture and is not recognized as an official holiday, but it is hard for someone to not be aware of their single status when they are surrounded by red roses and enough chocolate to make Willy Wonka’s head spin.
However, S.A.D. is not the day to be bitter or try and crush your seemingly happy, coupled friends.
In fact, single people have many more advantages on this day.
A single person is not bound by gift giving, demanding significant others for precious time, or even wearing preposterous amounts of red and pink. Yet for some unknown reason, some individuals choose to wallow in their self-pity.
This is the day where those single and aware need to hop off their couches, drop that tub of ice cream, and do something about their lack of love life.
All S.A.D. celebrators should have a good time on this day. Maybe throw a party. There certainly seems to be an abundance of chocolate, candy, and single friends with no other commitments. Spend some time thinking about what is good in your life and catch up with old family and friends.
Feb. 14 is not a day where S.A.D. celebrators should be sad, but to recognize everything there is to love in the world outside of dating. Besides, with so many people newly aware of their single nature, you may just have a chance to change your dating status.
