President Donald Trump touched the hearts of many Americans during his joint address to Congress, appointing a 13-year old brain cancer survivor for the Secret Service.
Devarjaye (“DJ”) Daniel was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2018. His prognosis was grim, with doctors giving him only 5 months to live. However, DJ defied the expectations, fighting through 13 separate surgeries. Each surgery presented its own challenges, and with each recovery, DJ’s personality changed according to his father, Theodis Daniel.
“I have to [keep] learn[ing] his personality,” DJ’s father explained to Fox News. “So, what you see is what you get until we have another surgery.” Despite the uncertainty and grueling treatments, DJ’s resilience and positive attitude became an inspiration to everyone around him.
Throughout his childhood, DJ had a lifelong fascination with law enforcement, particularly the police department. The admiration he held for those who protect and serve only grew during his health battle. Trump described DJ’s lifelong interest in the police department and the adoration that law enforcement has for him in his address. He concludes his appraisal of DJ by surprising him with an official position in the Secret Service department.
“And tonight, DJ, we’re going to do you the biggest honor of them all. I am asking our new Secret Service director, Sean Curran, to officially make you an agent of the United States,” Trump announced.
DJ’s reaction managed to win over Congress, his face of shock evoking everybody to stand and applaud while his father lifted him up.
Despite political affiliation, DJ’s story and excitement brought consistent positive reactions. Democratic representative Laura Gillen from New York rose from her seat and applauded for the young boy.
The ceremony was a heartwarming moment for the audience, as well as those who watched the State of the Union address remotely. DJ’s story was remarkable, with his perseverance inspiring many.
