Four new outlets were removed from their offices in the Pentagon following a change in the Press Corps policy, removing NBC, NPR, New York Times, and Politico. The outlets had been given the space for correspondents to work at and broadcast from in matters pertaining to the Department of Defense.
The outlets were removed following the announcement of a rotation program for outlets by Pentagon spokesman John Ullyot. “In order to broaden access to the limited space of the Correspondents’ Corridor to outlets that have not previously enjoyed the privilege and journalist value of working from physical office space in the Pentagon, beginning February 14, 2025, there will be a new Annual Media Rotation Program for those dedicated media spaces” Ullyot stated.
Rotating in will be One America News Network (OAN), the New York Post, Breitbart, and Huffpost. According to Allsides’ media bias analysis, OAN and Breitbart are both far-right leaning, the Post is right-leaning, and HuffPost is considered left-leaning. However, it is important to note that HuffPost had not requested the space, unlike the other three selected, nor do they currently have a Pentagon correspondent on staff. OAN, the New York Post, and Breitbart are all considered pro-Trump news outlets, fueling criticism from the left that the Trump Administration is striking back at the press for their negative coverage during the election cycle.
The outlets were not individually notified of the change, instead an email was sent to the Press Corp at large announcing the new program. There was no warning to the resident outlets. In a public statement, NBC news was saddened by the change. “We’re disappointed by the decision to deny us access to a broadcasting booth at the Pentagon that we’ve used for many decades. Despite the significant obstacles this presents to our ability to gather and report news in the national public interest, we will continue to report with the same integrity and rigor NBC News always has” they stated.
The Department of Defense decided to rotate these new outlets in covering the four main avenues of journalism: broadcast, radio, online news, and print news. However, no other plans have been put in place for this new program, including a schedule or time frame for future rotation, worrying the outlets that had been rotated out.
