On Presidents’ Day, thousands of Americans crowded the streets in cities across the US, including crowds in Washington DC, and Richmond, Virginia. These protests were organized by the 50501 Movement, a grassroots organization named for its goal. That goal is 50 protests in 50 states in 1 day. The movement was aiming to oppose and protest the policies of President Donald Trump and the influence of his billionaire advisor Elon Musk.
In Washington DC, protesters gathered near the capitol, voicing their concerns about recent executive orders and policy changes. Chants of “No kings on Presidents’ Day” were chanted through the streets, showing the protesters’ discontent with the current administration. Many protesters carried signs with slogans advocating to get Elon Musk out of power, because he was not elected to his position.
Richmond saw its own wave of protests assembled at Capitol Square. The rally was specifically focused on opposing President Trump’s executive orders about immigration, gender, and diversity, equity, and inclusion programs. Organizers pointed out the importance of grassroots activism and encouraged other protesters to reach out to advocacy groups to continue efforts even after presidents’ day.
The 5051 Movement, which started out on Reddit, has rapidly expanded its reach, organizing nationwide protests to challenge what they see as anti-democratic actions by the Trump administration. Their concerns are about how federal agencies are being taken down, cuts with public education funding, and the slow take away of rights for LGBTQ people, immigrants, and women. Elon Musk being included in government affairs, specifically his leadership of the newly established Department of Government Efficiency, has caused a lot of public outcry.
Despite facing harsh winter conditions, including freezing temperatures, protesters stayed put. In cities like Boston, about 1,000 people marched unphased by the cold, to express how upset they were with the administration’s actions. Similarly, in Houston, around 500 people gathered at City Hall, voicing their concerns about immigration policies and the alleged overreach of executive power.
While the protests were mostly peaceful, tension did emerge in some areas. In Arizona, attempts by protesters to enter the Statehouse led to confrontations with security and police. They continued to speak of their commitment to nonviolent actions and the importance of sticking to democratic principles.
