Following the recent presidential debate, the well known and loved music artist, Taylor Swift, announced her support for candidate Kamala Harris on her instagram account (@taylorswift).
On September 10th, Swift posted an image on instagram with a lengthy caption announcing that she will be casting her vote for Harris this fall. In this post, she mentions AI-produced images that were shared of women at a protest wearing “Swifties for Trump” t-shirts, implying that Swift was endorsing Trump and his campaign. The referenced photos were reposted by Trump on Truth Social, alongside his comment on it saying “I accept!”
Fans and viewers were able to recognize these images as AI, due to the inhuman and unrealistic appearance of the women in the photo. Despite the photos being apparently fake, Swift still felt she needed to publicly share her plans for the 2024 election. She stated that the misleading images being spread “brought [her] to the conclusion that [she needed] to be very transparent about [her] actual plans for this election as a voter.”
Swift also highlights the qualities and policies of the Democratic candidates that appeal to her. She describes Kamala Harris as a “steady-handed, gifted leader” and praises her running mate, Tim Walz for his views on LGBTQ+ and women’s rights.
Swift’s post did not go unanswered by Harris and Walz. Harris responded to Swift’s post during a recent interview on Wired’s “Autocomplete Interview” series. She describes Swift as an “incredible artist” and commends her courage to be able to “stand up for what she believes is right.” Walz also mentions it during an interview with People’s Magazine, expressing how grateful he is for the music artist.
Swift concluded the instagram caption encouraging people to do their own research, and to register to vote. She later posted on her story sharing links for first-time voters to register. “I’ve done my research, and I’ve made my choice. Your research is yours to do, and the choice is yours to make,” she said.
