ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy” is getting renewed for its 21st season. This medical drama has been running on television since 2005 and the producers show no signs of stopping. Since then, there have been over 400 episodes produced.
Produced and written by Shonda Rhimes, this series was originally featuring Ellen Pompeo as Meridith Grey, a “dark and twisty,” damaged woman who sees the world in varying shades of gray. On February 23rd of 2023 Pompe decided to leave Grey’s Anatomy as a regular character, her final episode being season 19, episode 7, “I’ll Follow the Sun.” Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) decided to move with her three children to Boston when her eldest daughter Zola (Aniela Gumbs) wanted to attend a school for gifted children.
Over the years, lots of main cast members have decided to end their time on Grey’s. A fan favorite, Meredith Grey’s (Ellen Pompeo) half sister, Lexie Grey (Chyler Liegh) was written off the show due to Leigh’s decision to leave this production. Patrick Dempsey, who portrayed Derek Shepherd, Meredith’s husband, decided to leave the series because the work schedule was too time-consuming and didn’t allow him to spend time with his family.
The cast of season 21 is still uncertain. Almost all of the veteran cast members’ contracts will expire in season 20 so new deals will have to be hammered out not only for the OGs Miranda Bailey, played by Chandra Wilson and Richard Webber, played by James Pickens Jr. but also actors Kevin McKidd, Kim Raver, Caterina Scorsone and Camilla Luddington.
The past seasons have been airing on Hulu and will continue to do so. It is also available to watch on ABC and Netflix. ABC hasn’t confirmed an exact release date for the show just yet, but it is likely to premiere in late September or early October of 2024. Grey’s Anatomy has been nominated for 39 Emmys and has had multiple wins. Fans are super excited for the drop of season 21. As the fall weather approaches, huddle up in your living room, grab some popcorn and tune into this thrilling medical drama.
