Virtual Reality (VR) is becoming more and more relevant in today’s society. But with VR becoming more popular, the dangers are becoming more evident. VR first started as an add-on to gaming systems, which was very popular to the younger generations. But now VR is slowly working its way into the working community, and being used in everyday life.
VR can be very damaging to younger children, as it can have long term effects to the head and the eyes. Eyesight concerns have been talked about for younger generations with the widespread use of phones and electronics in general. But scientists believe VR goggles will make this worse, as the screen is now so much closer to the eyes, and will cause a rise in nearsightedness in younger generations. But there have also been more severe things happening due to VR.
VR started to gain traction in 2014, when Sony announced they were working on a VR headset for the PS4. This was also when Samsung announced the Samsung Gear VR, which used a Samsung Galaxy smartphone as the viewer. The VR has since been propelled into other companies and uses. Apple recently released the Apple Vision Pro, which is selling for $3,500.
VR is becoming a problem with people using them in everyday life, including riding the subway and even driving with them on. This is a problem because VR goggles limit what you can actually see with your eyes, and the majority of your field of vision is what is being projected into the VR. This is leaving people susceptible to dangers like car crashes and increasing the risk of being robbed for this very valuable piece of technology.
With this being said, VR can be very dangerous if not used in the right way. It can cause long term eyesight damage, and make you more susceptible to bodily damage to yourself and to others. With the new technology, it is unclear what the future holds.
