As of December 28th, Gypsy Rose Blanchard was released from prison after serving seven years after conspiring and plotting the murder of her abusive mother, Dee Dee Blanchard. Although she herself did not murder her mother, she convinced her online boyfriend Nicholas Godejohn to murder her, an act which sent him to prison for life without parole after he was convicted of 1st degree murder. In 2015, Gypsy was charged with second degree murder. She pleaded guilty and got a 10-year-sentence.
Gypsy Rose Blanchard’s mother, Dee Dee, told doctors and people that Gypsy was suffering from leukemia and muscular dystrophy, when, in reality, Gypsy wasn’t ill. Dee Dee shaved her daughter’s hair, put her in a wheelchair, and forced her to eat through a feeding tube. Dee Dee Blanchard was diagnosed with Munchhausen syndrome, which is a psychological disorder that causes a caretaker to create a public illusion of their patient being ill for attention. Gypsy Rose started to believe she wasn’t sick after her mothers abuse grew in severity.
Gypsy Rose met her then boyfriend, Nicholas Godejohn, on a dating site behind her mothers back. They talked for two years before meeting in person, and Gypsy said that she was madly in love with him. Goldejohn believed that the only way he and Gypsy could be together was if Dee Dee was killed. The plan to kill Dee Dee was originally a back up plan but it became an official plan when Gypsy desperation grew. While Dee Dee was asleep, Goldejohn stabbed her to death while Gypsy was in the bathroom. After the murder, they stole $4,000 from Dee Dee and Gypsy posted on Dee Dee’s facebook, “That $%#@ is dead!” The police later raided Goldejohn’s home, where they were both arrested.
Now, Gypsy Rose is thriving outside of prison living in Louisiana with her husband Ryan Anderson, who she married in 2022. She has written a book about her tragic journey called “Released: Conversations on the Eve of Freedom.” There was also a show made about her and her mothers life called “The Act.” It came out in March of 2019 and it features actress Joey King playing Gypsy Rose. There is also a documentary about them, titled “Mommy Dead and Dearest” which was released in March of 2017, directed by Erin Lee Carr. Starting off with a strong 2024, Gypsy has big plans for her future, and is beyond excited to finally be free and happy after 32-years of suffering.
