DC Prepares for Trucker Protests
An outbreak of trucker protests took place after Covid vaccines were mandated for truckers entering the US from Canada. A significant number of trucks blocked borders. Many protesters were seen marching the streets as a way to participate and raise awareness for their believed issues. The police attempted to keep tabs on the protestors and their next move. Justin Trudeau, the Canadian Prime Minister, began freezing the protesters’ bank accounts after weeks of protesting.
Organizers even reached out to truck drivers in the US, urging them to enter D.C. or block the Capital Beltway. Canada’s Defense Secretary, Lloyd Austin, approved the National Guard’s involvement in the movement. Other groups are participating in this movement in Pennsylvania. Different groups are taking on different locations to block.
The troops being employed plan to ensure this is a peaceful protest and will cover traffic control. An additional group, known as Freedom Convoy USA, plans to drive to D.C. on Interstate 66 and I-495. A third group plans to arrive on Saturday, March 5. Both of these groups will join the blockade. A motivation behind these protests is that they “do not want to be under a dictatorship communism-style regime, like where we are right now”, said a participant in the protests. Officials are warning citizens of the changed routes and traffic patterns that could begin taking place.
