Students express anger over snow day decision (UPDATED)
The school board’s decision to have school today despite predictions of 1-3 inches of snow has caused anger in the student body.
“What about the kids who have to walk here? They may come in sparkling, but they’ll come in frozen too.” Junior Daniel Schmuckler said.
Several students and even teachers have been delayed in getting to the building, resulting in partially empty classes and some teachers having to step into other classrooms to take over until the proper teacher can arrive.
“The added snow days are not just for decorations. Use them.” Senior Robel Kabtyimer said.
The school board recently changed the school year schedule to build in several more days dedicated for snow.
“The school board should have made this decision earlier as opposed to waiting till the last minute again.” Senior Mathew Cibak said.
Students have been expressing their anger on Facebook and Twitter using the hashtag #closeFCPS, which was trending worldwide this morning.
UPDATE:
FCPS just sent out this message:
“We apologize for the difficulties the weather caused this morning. Please know that significant area government entities were coordinating at a very early hour. The decision was made with the best information we had very early this morning. Needless to say, the conditions were far worse than anticipated.
Weather conditions are expected to improve around midday. At this time, we are planning to dismiss schools at their normal dismissal time, however, we are continuing to closely monitor the situation and will keep parents apprised.
We are aware that people are asking us to cancel school. Students are safest at school when parents have not had a chance to make alternate plans for their child’s return home from school. However, should parents wish to pick up their children early, we will accommodate them.
Again we apologize for the difficulties experienced this morning and we thank you for your patience.”

This represents a major failure on the part of FCPS. Not only did they make the wrong call, but they put students in danger. ‘Difficulties’ is an understatement. Next time FCPS? Don’t put us in deadly situations. Send us out in the cold and snow, sure. But next time, check to make sure the roads are treated and the surrounding areas aren’t being hit hard. I don’t want to die, and neither do I want anyone else to die, so please, next time at least call a delay.
