Freshman Ben Gryski donates to the new food rescue project spearheaded by seniors Miki Konishi and Scott Waters.

Seniors Miki Konishi and Scott Waters began an effort to lessen waste and help those in need by setting up a program for students to donate unopened food items.“Miki and I have been working with Mr. Walker and the Embry Rucker Shelter to start a food rescue program,” Waters said.

Waters and Konishi set up boxes in the cafeteria for students to place their unopened food items December 2.

They elicit volunteers to collect and count the food at the end of D lunch and transport it to the shelter at the end of the week.

“This project gives the Class of 2014 a chance to make a difference on people’s lives and leave a lasting positive mark on South Lakes,” Waters said.

Students can help make an impact by volunteering and donating the following items:

  • Unopened granola bars
  • Packaged pudding
  • Unopened string cheese
  • Whole fruits
  • Bottled water, milk, or juice
  • Condiment packs
  • Prepackaged sandwiches
  • Prepackaged vegetable bags

“The goal is that as a senior class we all participate and we can pass down this tradition from grade to grade,” Waters said.
