Democratic gubernatorial candidate Terry McAuliffe speaks to supporters at a campaign rally Sunday, Nov. 3.

Senior Nojan Hajiabbassi spent his summer interning for Democrat Terry McAuliffe’s gubernatorial campaign.

“I organized and recruited volunteers,” Hajiabbassi said. “I ran errands for the offices. I also worked for Fairfax County Democrats, so if the campaign needed to get in contact with any local organizers, I was the go to person.”

Hajiabbassi strongly supports McAuliffe progressive approach to policy.

“As far as McAuliffe goes, I find him the ideal candidate for the transitional phase we are finding ourselves in as a ‘purple state,'” Hajiabbassi said. “Domestically, he is progressive, which I find to be something our state needs. The US is experiencing another social shift not quite unlike the one in the sixties. If Virginia is to remain one of the most prosperous states in the Union, we need to at the head of this progressive social change.”

He also lauds McAuliffe’s private-sector experience and ability to reach across the aisle.

“Economically, he isn’t ideologically driven,” Hajiabassi said. “As a former businessman, he takes a pragmatic approach, which has worked in other states.”

According to Hajiabassi, McAuliffe is an effective politician as well.

“As an individual. he is well known in political circles, is a good speaker, and commands respect,” Hajiabassi said. “As one the more prosperous states in the Union, we need a governor that can bring the respect we need on the national level.”

Hajiabbassi believes that McAuliffe will be victorious because of his appeal to key demographic groups.

“Today, we’re probably going to win,” Hajiabassi said. “McAuliffe pulls women, minorities, and the youth while tying Cucinellli with white men. Basically, we’ve got all of our corners covered.”
