Students and teachers are dying their hair bright orange in response to the senior class raising the most money for football coach Daniel Smith’s cancer treatment.
Seniors stand in first place after Thurs. lunches with juniors, sophomores, and freshmen trailing in class order.
“The seniors worked hard to raise money for Mr. Smith,” senior SGA executive council member Carson Gillions said. “Rachel Berman, Alli Carone, Abby Studen, and Bobby Rae Allen put together a car wash which raised over 587 dollars for Smitty Strong.”
Many teachers support fully the efforts of the student body by dying their hair as well.
“Smitty is my boy,” security guard Brian Elliot said. “Student Leadership sent out an email to the faculty asking us to dye our hair and there was a major response back.”
Principal Kimberly Retzer joined in the effort financially by donating 200 dollars to the junior class after they raised the most money this week, placing them 100 dollars behind the senior class.
“I feel like the senior class is very vocal about our support, so we raised a ton of money,” Gillions said. “The South Lakes student body raised about two thousand dollars all together but the goal can always be raised.”
Smith aims to raise 50,000 dollars for his treatment by his birthday in October.
“Whenever I’m feeling down I keep to myself,” Smith said. “I’m feeling strong today and I’m glad to be here, it’s good to see everyone.”
Donations are continually accepted for Smitty Strong in all sub-school offices as well as the main office, and in the cafeteria every Tues. and Thurs.
