Service opportunities are now more readily available online for students in need of community service hours.
In accordance with the International Baccalaureate Diploma program, students are expected to complete a minimum of 150 volunteer CAS hours. Students are required to complete 50 hours in the areas of creativity, action, and service.
South Lakes student services states online that students do not need to add much to what they are already doing to satisfy the CAS requirements.
“Students taking a (non-IB) music class can count their rehearsals and music composition for creativity hours,” student services states. “Students involved in school or rec-league sports can count those for Action, a Taking Flight Member can count those hours for Service. For some students, CAS may require them to step out of their comfort zone and try something new, but over the course of 1.5 years, there is plenty of time for that.”
In order to make opportunities more wide spread, CAS Administrator Charissa West created a Google document for students to access from their individual blackboard accounts with local service volunteering chances.
“In the past students needed to use six sites for all the information for opportunities to volunteer,” West said. “On the Google Docs there are many opportunities to volunteer. My hope is that having the information in one place with multiple people to add opportunities that students can really see.”
Students can log onto a school monitored Gmail account using their student identification number as their log in. Under the Drive folder in their account the service opportunities document can be found.
Volunteer activities currently include Spirit Equestrian, Reston Half and Full Marathon, and Reston Association openings.
