Recycling.
It’s a word that we all know and what we think of when we see that triangle comprised of revolving arrows on a blue bin.
It came, however, to the attention of biology teacher Jenny Holah, sponsor of the Environmental Club, that some of the materials put inside the recycling bins located in various places around the school are not recycled, but are instead put in with the ordinary garbage in the main dross dumpster.
“We have a large recycling bin out there,” said Holah. “It’s just getting the stuff into it.”
Recycling is one aspect the Environmental Club, headed by junior president Olivia Vita, is currently focusing on. The club is making an effort to raise awareness to the importance of recycling by performing acts such as hanging up posters in the copier room urging teachers to double side their papers and are planning a showing of a documentary about the environment.
“We’re trying to encourage people to use less paper and to make a point to recycle,” said Vita. “We’re going to try to collect recycling every Wednesday again.”
The club is always open to new members and Holah believes that more involvement from the school will have a positive effect on the amount of recycling done at South Lakes.
“We are giving service hours so kids can credit for CAS or MYP or Honor Society,” said Holah. “If a few kids per day could take care of the garbage it would really help out. It’s just a matter of getting students into the club.”
Members express the need to reduce, reuse and recycle as ways to give back to the earth and to prepare for the future as the student’s generation will soon be inheriting it. It was also pointed out that conserving is a way to protect and preserve the beauty of this green and blue planet.
“Go outside and take a walk and see the beauty of nature,” said Vita. “I really believe that there’s something for it in everyone and if people don’t pitch in and help and do what they can then it’s not going to stay that beautiful. It’s our job and responsibility to take care of it.”
