The intent of Curriculum Night is to inform parents of all opportunities in core and elective classes and to educate on what the South Lakes has to offer. Faculty members gathered Jan. 31 to promote their classes to rising freshman and parents.
Information regarding the many paths students could take for each subject was displayed through video, pictures, and music.
“I am glad I went to South Lakes for Curriculum Night,” rising freshman John Burbach said. “I would have no idea what I was signing up for if I didn’t attend.”
In addition to representatives from core and elective classes, clubs such as DECA, FBLA, yearbook, automotive technologies, and dance team showed up to advertise their activities.
One representative was career and technical education teacher Mindy Koeninger, who spoke to parents about FBLA and options for students in computer classes.
“I was glad to have Curriculum Night because I was able to have in-depth conversations with parents and was able to answer many questions,” Koeninger said.
Along with promoting classes and clubs, department heads gathered to discuss new graduation requirements for rising freshman as well as to review those for current students.
The new graduation requirement of Economics and Personal Finance raised questions that were addressed by the department head.
Feedback from parents was overwhelmingly positive.
According to Director of Student Services Davina Johnson, the night went well.
“The feedback I got from the families indicated that the night was a definite success,” Johnson said. “The families believed this was the best night in years and that it was concise, transparent, and addressed all concerns.”
