CEO and founder of “Beating the Odds” program and “Quarterbacks of Life” foundation, Rocco Scalzi has been chosen to speak at the South lakes Leadership Conference on January 26. The keynote speakers are M.G. Ret Clemmons who was formerly the Commandant, or director, of the National War College and National Defense University, and Mr. Paul Brundage from NASA. The conference will also have a breakout sessions hosted by our athletic team coaches, counselors, recruiting station, GMU ROTC Dept., and Cancer Society of America.
The leadership conference‘s mission runs parallel to that of JROTC’s which is to motivate young citizens. Hired motivational and inspirational speakers are hired to talk to the students about an unpredictable life after high school and how to prepare for it.
“Our goal is to be real with the kids and get them to think about their actions and then present ways that they can be proud of themselves and start doing things that will set them up for a successful life,” JROTC major Joseph Schuler said. “In the past we have had a lot of fun during this conference along with getting students to take a very hard look at their life and make some great changes.”
Many JROTC students will attend, along with other students from across the county. Though JROTC has hosted such events twice in the past, this is the first year the leadership conference is open to everyone.
“I’m really excited about the JROTC Leadership conference,” senior Joseph Miller said. “I haven’t been before so I hope to learn a lot and I think it will be really inspirational. The event is supposed to teach people to appreciate their skills and learn what it takes to be healthy both physically and mentally.”
