Speech team recently held their first competition on, Nov. 10. The team is performing at a higher level than ever before.
The team has many competitions scheduled for the next few months. In the past year the team had two students make it to state wide competition.
“So far this year we have already had students place in the top six for every competition,” said speech team coach Rebecca Samba. “We already have five students qualified for finals.”
Speech competes with other area schools as part of the Washington Area Catholic Forensics League. The next competition will be held at Robinson, Saturday, Dec.15.
Samba expects much success this season.
“I think we definitely will have some students get up to state level” said Samba, “Especially since we have been more successful than we were in our earlier competitions and the team is so much bigger this year. Last year we started with two or three students and ended up with about 12.This year we already have over 20 students registered.”
Team members are enjoying the season.
“ It’s a very fun team to join,” said Carlie Sigle head of public relations “ If you compete in an event such as impromptu you don’t have to do any work outside of school.”
The competitions occur about once or twice a month and will last a full day. They are usually held at a local high school. South Lakes hosted the last competition.
“The competitions are very long,” said new member Elena Botts “You have to compete in many rounds, so you are there for the whole day.”
How do the competitions work?
“You get your assignments for room numbers and go to the first round,” said Co-Captain Antonia Nagle. “You then perform and go back to the cafeteria of the school you are competing in and wait until the next rounds are called to then compete again.”
Nagle, along with senior Sydney Seed, have qualified for Metro Finals.
The team practices every Thursday in the cafeteria. New members are welcome.
