Kim Retzer, former assistant principal and South Lakes High School graduate, was introduced as the new principal of South Lakes High School today at 11:30 a.m. to faculty, staff, and community members.
Dr. Fabio Zuluaga, assistant superintendent for Cluster VIII, presented Retzer after listing key attributes he and Superintendent Jack D. Dale were looking for in the new candidate.
“Dr. Dale and I were looking for a candidate who was familiar in special education, International Baccalaureate, regular education, and ESOL,” Zuluaga said.
Retzer returns with plans in store.
“I want to continue the sense of community South Lakes is so well known for,” Retzer said. “I will maintain the need for 21st century critical thinking, open mindedness, and emphasis on technology that comes with the IB program.”
Principal Bruce Butler, who officially retires June 29, is confident that Retzer is the correct choice to serve at South Lakes.
“I was and I remain excited when I was told Mrs. Retzer got the job for numerous reasons,” Butler said. “She is a brilliant instructional leader that I had the opportunity to work with for many years, perfect to continue the growth and development of South Lakes. Nobody knows the school better than her. She is a strong leader who is super organized. She sees nuances nobody else sees.”
Retzer graduated with the South Lakes Class of 1989. Since then Retzer stayed involved with the South Lakes community. Retzer taught special education and more recently served as an assistant principal at South Lakes. During the selection process, which included 36 other candidates, much input from teachers and parents emphasized a need of commitment to community and an understanding of the needs of all students as needed prerequisites for the South Lakes position.
After serving as an assistant principal at Westfield for the 2011-2012 school year, Retzer admits she is glad to be back at South Lakes.
“It is great to be home,” Retzer said. “I am looking forward to working with students, faculty and the community for years to come.”
