Reston Bike Club officers presented awards to the top six winners in the 2012 Jersey Design Contest at a ceremony this morning.
The competition is an annual event open to South Lakes students involved in computer graphics. This year, over 40 students submitted designs to the club for consideration.
“We are really pleased by the student participation,” said Reston Bike Club secretary Barb Lytle. “The response has been great and we hope that it will continue in the future.”
First place and $500 were awarded to junior Tyler Hutchins, senior Nick Beaulac earned second place and $300, and sophomore Kaitlyn Hudenburg was given $200 for her third place entry. Senior Kristian Gendron and juniors Hadir Abdalla and Max Hijar each earned honorable mention and $100.
Hutchins’s winning design featured biking terms and motivational statements. He intentionally incorporated these elements in order to set his submission apart from the others.
“I wanted to be unique with my design because I knew that if my design wasn’t different from other ones then it wouldn’t come out on top,” said Hutchins.
Hutchins’s strategy evidently paid off. According to Lyte, support for Hutchins’s and Beaulac’s design was almost split but the slogans that Hutchins used ultimately gave him an advantage.
“The jersey that Tyler designed had a lot of good catchphrases that cyclists can relate to,” said Lytle.
Hutchins’s design will be reproduced on jerseys celebrating the Reston Bike Club’s 30th anniversary. Hutchins will receive a complementary jersey and the rest will be sold to club members.
“I am almost more excited to get the bike jersey than I am for the $500,” said Hutchins.
The club is sponsoring another contest this summer for t-shirt designs. For more information, check out the Reston Bike Club website: http://www.restonbikeclub.org/.
