Fairfax County School Board voted in a 10-2 resolution to develop a county-wide goal of starting high schools after 8 a.m. April 12.
The decision directs Superintendent Jack Dale along with the FCPS staff to research high schools that have implemented a later start time.
“It’d be great because I’d be able to get more sleep in the morning,” said sophomore Johnette Saviour.
Members Ted Velkoff and Kathy Smith voted against the resolution.
An amendment changing the resolution so that Fairfax County Public Schools are not required to implement 8 a.m. start times, in order to properly consider all options and consequences, was proposed by Velkoff, but overruled by the adoption of the current resolution, as reported by the Reston Patch.
“As a parent, I would support it, but as an employee, I would hate to stay any longer than I do,” said receptionist Elizabeth Knapp. “Practically speaking, it’s not a very pragmatic idea.”
Dale and the FCPS staff will report their findings to the School Board on a June 11 work session.
