A new system of purchasing food in the cafeteria will begin the week of Dec. 1.
The new system, which will run off the internet, strives to be more efficient and modern. When students enter their Personal Identification Number, their school picture will pop up. New touch screen computers will replace the old registers.
This process will prevent identity theft because the system will tell whether a student is using his PIN number or someone else’s.
Last year, only the snack line featured this technology.
Kay Kimble, of Financial Support for Food and Nutritional Services in Fairfax County, said that the main reason for these changes was not PIN number theft.
“The systems were mainly installed because we felt we needed to get up to date like other school systems,” said Kimble.
Junior Anjelica Mukhergee is torn about the new arrangement.
“I feel like it’s more secure but could be inconvenient if a friend is letting you borrow their card,” said Mukhergee. “But then again students might lend their card to a friend for one time and the friend will keep using it.”
Senior Daniel Kvavilashvili likes the system for a different reason.
“I like the new keypad because the buttons are easier to press,” said Kvavilashvili.
