Recently a new alarm system has been installed in the bell schedule to alert students when there are two minutes left before the beginning of the next period.
During the debut of the bell, many students and faculty expressed shock and fright when they heard the booming hawk-like cry through the PA system. Many students looked at each other in confusion thinking an actual bird was flying freely in the building.
“It scared me,” said sophomore George Vera. “I didn’t know whether or not we were supposed to go to class.”
Some even find the “squawk” amusing.
“I think it’s hilarious,” said junior Elias Ingea. “It’s pretty entertaining because it is different.”
On the other hand, some students find the alert too realistic and even question its effectiveness.
“I hate it,” said sophomore Kristin Zipprich. “Everyone gets so annoyed [when it rings]. It’s a bothering noise and it hasn’t helped me at all. Also, a lot of people don’t know what it is even for.”
The purpose of the new bell is to promote timeliness and discourage tardiness. While some students ignore it, others support the new bird call.
“I think it’s a good thing,” said junior Kenna Salvatore. “But the actual sound is weird and annoying.”
