Construction has begun and the color has been chosen for the new Metro line that is coming to the Reston area.
Also known as Metrorail, the popular DC transportation system is scheduled to come to the Reston community area as soon as 2014.
“I think the Metro station will be really awesome and we’ll be able to go a lot farther,” said junior Yessenia Montoya. “It will be good for us to have a connection to DC.”
The train system has different tracks that are labeled by the colors red, yellow, green, blue, and orange. The new track will be called the Silver Line, and it will run from the Orange Line’s East Falls Church station to Dulles Airport.
The track will be 23 miles long and will include ten new stations, many in popular areas. These stations include Tysons Corner East, Herndon-Monroe, Dulles Airport, and Reston Parkway. Once completed, these stations will connect to the rest of the Metrorail tracks.
“The line will connect the airport, Tysons, and DC in a perfect way,” said Reston Association President Kathleen McKee.
The Reston Association is involved in the new project and supports the changes the Metro will bring. The association is also involved with Comstock Partners, a private organization that teamed up with Fairfax County to create the Silver Line.
Reston Association plans to stay involved until the completion of the project in order to monitor how it affects the community.
“Reston Association is closely watching to make sure that the needs of the Reston community are met above all others,” said McKee.
Although many in Reston might use the Silver Line to commute away for work, shopping, or entertainment, McKee predicts that the opposite will happen.
“We will probably see more commercial business and homes in the area,” said McKee.
Even though the new line plans to bring many great changes into the area, some students are finding issues in the track.
One of these issues is the amount of time it will take to finish the Silver Line and make it accessible for public use.
“It won’t even be done by the time I’m done with college,” said senior Lindy Westenhoff. “Besides, we’re too far away to really be connected to DC.”
The track is a two part project, with each section scheduled for completion during different years. The first part of the track, which will run from the Orange Line to a station at Wiehle Avenue, is set for completion in 2014. The second part of the track will take two more years to complete and will run from Reston Parkway to Route 227.
Construction of the Silver Line currently creates problems on roadways.
“These new lines will probably impact traffic and traffic patterns,” said McKee. “I don’t think that it has impacted much yet, but I know that people are no longer parking at Wiehle.”
Construction has not heavily affected areas in Reston, but many other station sites have changed the nearby streets. Road blocks and rerouting became very common in the Tysons Corner area where multiple stations are scheduled to be built.
“My dad works in Tysons so I’ve traveled through the area a lot,” said senior Tony Nelson. “There are a lot of road blocks and lanes being blocked off.”
Though there are problems for current upperclassmen, many of whom will miss the new metro line, some of the underclassmen are anticipating the new transport system.
“I’m looking forward to it since it will ease transportation and ease traffic,” said sophomore Josh Forrest.
