Senior Matthew Hutchins balances a variety of activities
Senior Matthew Hutchins balances a rigorous schedule of daily activities that leaves no room for error.
Along with taking five IB classes and maintaining a 4.1 GPA, Hutchins participates in other school activities including two honor societies, the Relevant Club, varsity and Herndon Athletic Youth soccer team, and the school swim team.
Hutchins is also able to demonstrate his leadership skills by being part of a youth group leadership team and captain of the varsity soccer squad, while holding a part-time job working hotel maintenance and actively participating as a member of two churches. On the side, he is a wedding videographer one to two times a month and a senior photo photographer.
“Through all of my activities, I have learned a lot of lessons, such as time management,” Hutchins said. “Leadership roles have taught me how to deal with people I don’t necessarily get along with and work with people that I don’t necessarily want to work with but can’t just get rid of. A lot of my roles are things that will be useful in life, so I would say that I am better equipped for adulthood because of things like leadership roles, leading a club or team.”
Even though Hutchins’ agenda is demanding, stress is not always a problem because he has learned to not get too overwhelmed.
“I have a high stress level,” Hutchins said. “But it’s not to the point where I can’t handle it. I know how to handle it because I take it day by day. That’s the only way I can handle it. Faith in God is a lot of it, because God is my dependence. I don’t worry about the future, if I take it day by day and trust God.”
With all of his athletic experience, Hutchins hopes to continue playing sports in college.
“I want to play soccer in college,” Hutchins said. “Right now, my number one choice is Christopher Newport University.”
Throughout his high school career, Hutchins has faced many challenges trying to find a balance between school, religion, and extracurricular activities. Yet, in time, all of his hard work eventually paid off by learning that challenging yourself is worthwhile.
“I would consider myself successful,” Hutchins said. “I have accomplished a lot of things, challenged myself academically, completed tasks I didn’t think I could complete, and accomplished things I didn’t think I could accomplish.”
