Starting this year the new club, Baking for a Cause, may potentially join the list of extracurricular activities that student may join.
Potential club president Melissa Pham enjoys baking food and community service, and mixes the ideas in this prospective club.
“I like baking and wanted to put my skills to a good cause,” Pham said, “So we would bake food and give it to a variety of causes. It wouldn’t be for just one cause.”
Despite Pham’s interest in starting the club the group is still only in its planning period and thus has yet to become official.
“The club has been approved by South Lakes, but it still needs to be approved by the higher levels from FCPS,” culinary arts teacher Cynthia Stowers said.
However, if the club passes through FCPS, then the group will face the task of cutting down on members, as there were around 60 people at the first interest meeting.
“We had a lot more people coming than I thought would come,” Pham said, “Not only did we run out of forms but all of the cookies I made for people were gone.”
Junior Ana Martinez, a co-founder and potential member, explained why so many students may have shown up to the meeting.
“People like food,” Martinez said. “Baking and donating is a great way to have fun while earning community service.”
The creators of the club fear that some students who appeared at the interest meeting may not have understood the obligations of the potential club.
“I think that some students were in there for the wrong reason,” Stowers said. “Some students seemed like they were in it for the food, but that’s not why we’re here. Many students probably except to be in-and-out of the club by 3:30 like most clubs, but this is not the case. The club would take commitment because it takes time to plan the meals, get the ingredients, and do the baking itself.”
Despite these fears Pham still anticipates that Baking for a Cause will become a great benefit for the school and the community.
“People can make new friends, learn new recipes, and help people,” Pham said, “I think it’ll be a lot of fun.”
